Odyssey is an intimidating skin line to be part of because of the really high standards of the older pieces but it was really fun to do a colorful sci-fi scene this time.
In the thumbnail stage. I struggled with the low angle a bit. I used an app called MagicPoser and aligned it to my sketch to help me figure out my errors at first then Mingchen’s sketch made it a lot better with the foreshortened hand. I like to redraw the lines again and again at this stage. It helps me a lot improve and learn about the character better. In terms of colors, at first I tried a look that was close to Odyssey Jinx but eventually they approved something more blue. I was experimenting with a lighting without a rim light and I’m glad they chose this.
When rendering, the hardest parts were the hat, and the face area. His scarf is covering too much of his face so we had to cheat it a bit to show more. I actually drew his whole face underneath just to make sure the anatomy is correct and for fun. I also tried to squeeze in as much easter eggs in the bg as I can. For the ships, I used Lazy Nezumi’s fish eye guidelines to help me.

Splash FAQ:
-A splash takes 4-5 weeks. 1st week for multiple sketches. 2nd week to figure out the colors. 3rd to 5th week to render and polish.
– This video is 60x speed up which means the real time is around 60+ hours. Real work hours are more than 120+ hrs when you factor in the other thumbnails, research and revisions.
-If ever I repeat doing anything, it’s because Photoshop crashed and I had to redo it. This happened maybe 3 times.
-To quickly color a grayscale, I use two methods. First method is to make flat colors first then put the grayscale on top. Brighten up the grayscale and colorize it then set it to multiply. This Acts as an AO pass.
Second messier method is to use softlight and color layers on top of the grayscale. This makes it a bit look dull on the highlights so you need to manually fix the highlight colors.
– Tip for revisions. You can use liquify on multiple layers. Right after you do it on one layer. You can press Alt+Ctrl+F to apply it again to a different layer. Make sure not to deselect your selection if you are doing this.
– I use color dodge to add in lighting layers.
– No, I am not going to upload longer or shorter versions of this. This is the middle ground that people like.

Thanks for sharing the process!!!
Hey Deiv, would you ever be interested in posting the full videos unedited, no need for vocals or anything on gumroad as well?
It would help a lot sometimes with trying to see what layer mode was being used to get certain effects in the environment, etc
What do you use to draw on?

What did he use for the 3d pose reference?
I'm in a sort of trance watching this. May I ask, at minute 46:34 you bring up a tool to get down the perspective grid for the ships; I'm fairly new to PS and I haven't seen it before, where can I find it?
Other than that, I have no words, the colors are just so vibrant. I love it.
I don't play LoL but I love watching your timelapses! Gives me motivation to improve my art. <3

amazing art and breathtaking levels of detail and polish! the complexity of the number layers looks quite daunting, is there preset structure you use there? Also thank you for sharing this process, it's good to see how such professional work is created
I just cant wait to see your next video
Hey! Is there a period in the splash process where you feel very underwhelmed by what you're creating? If so, do you move on and feel better about it when you add the finishing touches? I can never finish a splash because it looks so plain to me I just restart the whole thing
22:16 how did you do that? To have it open on separate tab??
How does one get a job at riot?
